I keep getting irrationally annoyed by people conflating PR and media relations.  It’s funny I suppose, but also more than a little bit enraging, so I thought I’d write up this blog post.

Public relations (PR) is a term that means different things to different people. For many, it’s synonymous with media relations—the art of getting a brand mentioned in the press. While media relations is a crucial aspect, equating PR solely with it is a misconception.

PR is a multifaceted discipline that encompasses a wide range of activities, from strategic counsel to reputation management, creative content development, social media, influencer engagement, and much more.

As the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) defines it: “Public relations is about reputation—the result of what you do, what you say, and what others say about you. Public relations is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and behaviour.”

In other words, PR is about shaping and maintaining the image of a brand across various platforms and among diverse audiences. Or, to put it more simply, PR is what happens when someone says something nice about you after you’ve strategically ‘suggested’ it to them over coffee. Or something like that.
