We’re no strangers to a box set or two at the weekend, so the idea of conducting some research into which characters from TV and film inspire us and influence our career choices came naturally.
In partnership with our client Fletchers Solicitors, the UK’s leading medical negligence firm, we launched the ‘Careers on the Box’ report, which revealed some of our top telly career inspirations including the panel of Dragons Den, musician-turned scientist Brian Cox, and Suits lawyer Rachel Zane, played by Meghan Markle (Prince Harry’s current beau).
What’s more, much like the influx of forensic science course applicants inspired by shows like CSI a decade ago, the rise in the number of programmes about lawyers (Suits, Law & Order, The Good Wife etc.) looks to have influenced the number of law degree applicants, according to the most recent figures from UCAS, supporting the findings of our research.
We then started sharing our findings with the media, with the UK’s journalists as intrigued as us in the research results. National newspaper coverage came both in print and online in the Daily Mirror. We also shared the news with the women’s lifestyle and fashion media, securing the holy trinity of fashion coverage, Vogue.co.uk, Harper’s Bazaar, and Marie Claire.
However, it wasn’t all fluff and fashion, the research was also covered by a number of legal and human resource titles, including The Law Society Gazette, HR Director, and All About Law, creating a great level of brand exposure and awareness in both consumer and trade media, while securing high domain authority editorial links.
